All assignments will be submitted in a Google Drive folder that you will share with me.
For help with setting up your Google Drive folder for this class, please see the Setting Up Google Drive page under Class Info.
Once you have shared your ENGL 1180 folder with me, I will be able to see any documents/files that you place in that folder or any subfolders in that folder. You do not need to share individual files with me—just put them in your shared folder.
For the essays in this class, we will use basic MLA formatting, and the following can be used as a rough guide for paper formatting. (Note: this doesn't apply to any assignments that are in other non-academic genres, like an email or infographic).
Margins: one inch on all sides
Font: Times New Roman or a similar basic font; 12 point
Heading: Upper left-hand corner; your name, the class name, and the date, on the first page only
New Paragraphs: indent the first line of each new paragraph (press the tab key on your keyboard).
Spacing: double-space throughout, including within the heading and before and after the title. Do not add extra lines between paragraphs.
Title: Centered, below the heading, with MLA capitalization of titles. Do not bold or underline the title.
See this website for an interactive example MLA paper.
For help with using Google Drive, please see the following resources and YouTube tutorials:
Formatting your paper in Google Docs (MLA format)
Note: you don't need headers for our class, so you can skip some of the advice in this video. Pay specific attention to how to double-space your paper and how to indent the first line of each new paragraph.
Written feedback from me will typically be left on the assignment in Google Drive. For submission packets, I may leave the feedback on your revised draft and/or on the self-evaluation form. If I have any issues leaving feedback on the document (for example, if your sharing is not set up correctly in Google Drive), I will leave a note in Canvas.
For smaller assignments, once we're into the semester, if you are on the right track, I may just give you a grade. If you receive full credit with no comments on a smaller assignment, that means you're doing great and I didn't have any additional suggestions!
All grades will be input in Canvas.
I try to get back all smaller assignments to students within a week.
For submission packets/revised drafts, these take me longer to read through and give thoughtful feedback on, so please be patient for these. I will typically get these back to students within 2-3 weeks.
If the above timeframes have passed and I haven't mentioned in class if I'm a bit behind on grading, please first double check that you turned in the assignment to the correct folder and then feel free to reach out to me. I may have accidentally missed your assignment as I was going through the class's Google Drive folders. It doesn't happen frequently, but occasionally it does happen.
